Accepting Bid to Fix School Gym’s Roof

Frances Hubbard/ Daily Press file Temporary bracing had been put in place to support the Lee-Jackson Elementary School gym roof that collapsed during a snowstorm in January 2016.

School officials have accepted one of two bids received for repairs to the damaged gym roof on Lee-Jackson Elementary School.

After receiving no bids last month, Mathews County Public Schools had to re-issue a request for proposals to fix the roof, which collapsed during a snowstorm in January 2016. Bids were due last week.

Tuesday, the School Board approved Superintendent Nancy Welch’s recommendation to accept the bid of Athens Building Corporation/First Class Contracting, a firm from Richmond. The bid totaled $236,000 for a roof replacement proposal that included protection measures for the existing gym floor.

The bid of Morse Enterprises in Mathews for a total of $195,000 was not chosen.

According to Welch, the First Class Contracting bid was the “lowest complete and responsive bid.” It states that work will be complete within 45 days after construction begins. Mathews schools accept bid for gym roof fix – Daily Press
