Roofing Glossary

  • Two ply – Modiflex / Torchflex SBS.
  • Modiflex and Torchflex are high performance modified bitumen roofing and waterproofing systems that are quickly installed, easy to maintain, and highly cost efficient
  • Asphalt Kettle – an asphalt container used for “hot mopping” in roofing industry.
  • Asphalt Primer – Liquid asphalt that improves adhesion and prepares the surface for an asphalt course.
  • Bitumen – natural or manufactured cementitious sub-stances. Mostly found in petroleum asphalts and coal tars.
  • BUR Roofing Systems – Built-up Roofing System, a multi-ply roof membrane that consists of fabrics, coated felts, saturated felts, plies with additional bitumen layers added in between.
  • Drain – an outlet that directs water flow from the roof
  • EPDM Roofing Systems – Ethylene Propylene Diene Monomer, is a versatile rubber roofing membrane that is widely used across Canada, because of it stability against weather conditions and extreme flexibility.
  • Hoist – an elevator used in a roofing industry.
  • L200 Rubber Rock – waterproof protective roofing coating used for roofing restoration and new construction. It strongly bonds with roof membrane and provides extra strong defense from water, sunlight and pollution.
  • Membrane – a roof layer (covering), which primary function is to exclude water from damaging the roof
  • Metal flashing – Thin sheet of material usually used at roof hips and valleys for additional water resistance.
  • Modified Bitumen Roofing 2ply – roofing system that consists of five basic components, which can be assembled in variety of combinations.
  • Plywood – is a wood veneers manufactured in sheets
  • Primer – thin liquid bitumen applied to flat roof surface to improve adhesion of subsequent layers.
  • Propane – a colorless, easily liquefied, therefore widely used in roofing industry for kettles and torches.
  • Propane Torch – a roofing tool operated for the application of flame or heat which uses propane, used in the manufacturing and construction.
  • Skylight – an overhead window, which allows natural flow of light into the building.
  • Tall Cone Flashing – a sealing device located on pipe or chimney. Diverts rain and snow off the roof.
  • Tiocoat –polyuethane modified acrylic elastomeric coating used over modified bitumen, BUR and commercial roofing systems. Tiocoat contains of three elements: protective barrier that expands and contracts based on the temperature, weather resistant membrane and dirt resistant technology.
  • TPO Roofing Systems – (Thermoplastic polyolefin) is a Single Ply Roofing from polyprophylene and polymerized ethylene-propylene rubber together. One of the most popular and commonly used roofing systems.
